How To: Decrypting Your Report

If you chose for your report to be encrypted, you will need to decrypt it to view it.

Follow these simple steps to decrypt the report.

It is recommended that you view your report on a desktop device, as it will make viewing easier. It can be done from any device, however.

Windows

We will use 7-Zip for this. 7-Zip is a free file archiver used to compress/encrypt files.

1. Go to https://www.7-zip.org and download 7-Zip.

One of the top two download links will be the one you want, depending on if you have a 32-bit or 64-bit Operating System. If you aren’t sure, you can just download the 32-bit version.

2. Install 7-Zip

3. If you haven’t already, download the rechor report sent to you via the method you preferred.

4. Find the report file on your computer. Right-click on the file – you should see a “7-Zip” menu item. Hover over “7-Zip” and then click on “Open archive.” Note: if you don’t see a “7-Zip” menu item as shown in the image below, you may have to double click the file and direct it to the 7-Zip install location (should be under C:/Program Files or C:/Program Files (x86))

5. After you click “Open archive,” you should be taken inside of the archive that contains the report. From the top menu, click on “Extract.”

6. You’ll be prompted to list a “Copy to:” location. Set this to wherever you want the file to be placed. Click “ok.”

7. You’ll then be prompted to enter your password to decrypt the file. This is the password that was sent to you via your preferred method of delivery. Enter the password and click “ok.”

Your report will now be decrypted in the location you specified.

Mac

Two methods will be offered here – both are free. The first we will use The Unarchiver, and in case that doesn’t work, we will use the command line with Homebrew/p7zip

First Method: The Unarchiver

1-1. Download The Unarchiver at https://theunarchiver.com/ or from the Mac App Store.

1-2. If you haven’t already, download the rechor report sent to you via the method you preferred.

1-3. Launch The Unarchiver. Here you will want to associate all “.7z” files.

1-4. Find your rechor report on your computer and open it. The Unarchiver should prompt you for a password. This is the password that was sent to you via your preferred method of delivery.

Your report should now be decrypted.

Second Method: Command Line (Terminal) -- In case Method 1 does not work

2-1. Install Homebrew by following the directions on the front page here: https://brew.sh/

2-2. After you have installed Homebrew, install p7zip by opening up a command line (Terminal) and typing “brew install p7zip” (without the quotes).

2-3. If you haven’t already, download the rechor report sent to you via the method you preferred. Remember the location where you saved the report.

2-4. In the Command Line (Terminal), type “7za e PATHTOFILE.7z” (without the quotes).

Note: Replace “PATHTOFILE.7z” with the actual path to the rechor report. To find the path of the file, you can locate the file on your screen and right-click and select “Get Info.” You should see a label titled “Where.” That is your file’s path that you need to replace “PATHTOFILE.7z” with.

2-5. You should be prompted to enter a password. This is the password that was sent to you via your preferred method of delivery.

Your report should now be decrypted.

Linux

We will use p7zip for this. P7zip is a free command line version of 7-Zip.

1. As there are many different versions of Linux out there, here are links to installing p7zip on three popular distros.

– Ubuntu – “sudo apt-get install p7zip-full” : https://linuxhint.com/install-7zip-compression-tool-on-ubuntu/

– Fedora – “sudo yum install p7zip p7zip-plugins” : https://www.tecmint.com/7zip-command-examples-in-linux/

– Arch Linux – “sudo pacman -S p7zip” : https://www.archlinuxuser.com/2018/10/how-to-use-7zip-on-archlinux-command.html

2. If you haven’t already, download the rechor report sent to you via the method you preferred.

3. Enter the following command “7za x /PATHTOREPORT.7z

4. You’ll then be prompted to enter your password to decrypt the file. This is the password that was sent to you via your preferred method of delivery.

Your report should now be decrypted.

iOS (Including iPad)

If you are using iOS 13 or later or iPadOS, you should be able to extract the files directly from the Files app. If not, you can use iZip.

Note: For more information, see this article: https://appletoolbox.com/how-to-open-unzip-zip-rar-files-on-the-iphone-ipad-ipod-touch/

1. Download iZip from the App Store.

2. If you haven’t already, download the rechor report sent to you via the method you preferred. Remember the location where you saved the report.

3. Open iZip and tap “Document Browser.” Locate your rechor report in your save location and tap it.

4. You should be prompted to enter the password. This is the password that was sent to you via your preferred method of delivery.

After a few prompts, your report should now be decrypted.

Android

We will use RAR for this. RAR is a free application available on the Google Play Store used to manage archived files.

1. Go to the Google Play Store and search for “RAR.” The author will be RARLAB. Install the application.

2. If you haven’t already, download the rechor report sent to you via the method you preferred.

3. Open the RAR app – it should show you a list of your device’s directories. Find the location where your rechor report was saved (if unsure, check the “Download” folder).

4. Tap the rechor report file – you’ll now be inside the archive.

5. Tap the rechor report. You should be prompted for a password to decrypt the file. This is the password that was sent to you via your preferred method of delivery. Enter the password and tap “ok.”

6. You may be prompted to choose a program to open the file. Select one and tap “Just Once” or “Always.”

Your report should now be decrypted.
